My ANZAC Diary

In room 2 this week we have been looking at diary writing while in the trenches during the ANZAC campaign of WW1. Here is an example by Sophia Mansell.

July 5th 1915
Well Diary,
War is not a nice place. Living in trenches is the worst! Rats as big as cats run around like they own the place, not a single bit scared of us. They contaminate our food and spread disease like fire also feed on corpses.Sometimes they even attack sleeping men.Constant drizzle has made us all wet through in our heavy suits. There's gunfire all around us and shells are exploding. You can sense if a bomb is coming by the silence. A shiver goes up my spine at every explosion. Mud 1 metre deep everywhere. The worst is thinking about home, missing family non-stop. Lice in every man’s seams of their heavy suit incubated by body heat. Nits swarm in the hair of every man and you get you hair shaved to the skull. Disease lurking in every corner and shrapnel slicing through the air and occasionally hitting someone.Seeing friends falling to the ground with a photo of family in their hand. Food so horrible it makes you gag but you force it down because you know it’s your only hope. Rock hard biscuits and watery stew every day and you're desperate for a hot meal. The smell there is blood all other smells are drowned out. Next to you are rotting carcases andyou try not to look. The trench life is almost unbearable better go now I've been called for front line.

I’ll write tomorrow.
